The details below, together with the photograph of the train carriage were very kindly supplied by a gentleman visitor at one of my vintage market events. He is a collector of train photographs and was able to provide excellent information on the carriage sign.
‘We spoke at the Plumstead village market on Saturday about the cast iron number plate you had up for sale: No. S1629. I said I would see if I had a picture of it, but unfortunately I don’t. However, I do have a picture of S1640 which was from the same batch of vans built by Ashford Works in 1950. The photo is taken in 1981 which is when they went out of service. These were luggage/parcels vans and at the time of withdrawal were mainly used for newspaper traffic’

Condition is as shown in the various images and comes with age related wear and tear.
This sign would have originally been painted in white on a black background, it has been repainted (by others) in recent years.
